How to 10x your YouTube views and subscribers
Yesterday, I told you about the time I thought sub 4 sub was a good idea…
In this email, I’m going to share the story of how I got from 400 subscribers to:
Over 4k subscribers,
A video with over 500k views
Another video with over 200k views
And how all of that actually HURT my channel instead of helping it.
Let’s get into the interesting stuff:
Back in 2013, I had less than 1,000 subscribers and I couldn’t imagine ever creating a video that got over 100,000 views.
I was using YouTube to promote my music and I had a GENIUS idea…
Kanye West had JUST released Yeezus and I saw a massive opportunity.
Here’s the thing:
I had seen a bunch of videos on YouTube that were uploads of FULL ALBUMS.
These videos were getting a CRAZY amount of views.
So I thought:
I can upload the FULL ALBUM of YEEZUS and promote my music with annotations and a link in the description…
It was a GREAT idea!
I put all the songs together using Adobe Premiere Pro and uploaded the video…
The video started bringing in CRAZY numbers.
I had NEVER had that many views, comments and subscribers come in at this pace before.
Within days, the video had tens of thousands of views.
It was WORKING!!
But I did get a copyright claim from UMG on my videos – so I wasn’t making ANY money from this.
All the money was going to UMG. I thought this was fair enough, I just wanted to be able to promote my tunes anyway.
But I didn’t stop there:
I saw this golden opportunity and I decided to capitalise…
Next I uploaded Jay Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail Album.
This was as hot as the first video. People LOVED it and the views rolled in…
The YEEZUS video had over 500,000 views!
The Magna Carta video was close to hitting 300,000 views (also claimed so I made NO MONEY).
I had gained over 3,000 new subscribers!
But, this wouldn’t last for long…
A few months after I uploaded the videos, my channel was SMACKED with TWO COPYRIGHT STRIKES FROM UMG.
Not copyright claims…this was a damn STRIKE!
That’s serious business.
3 Copyright strikes and you are OUTTA HERE!
After I got the strikes, I realised that maybe this wasn’t the best idea…
I had these strikes for about 9 months (because I didn’t get both of them at the same time – strikes last 6 months).
In this time, one of my other videos blew up.
It went to over 50k views, then 100k, then up and up.
And I didn’t get a CENT because when you get a strike your whole channel is demonetised!!!
That video is now my biggest video with over 1 MILLION VIEWS and it’s STILL ranking on the first page of YouTube…
The video is “How To Write A Rap Song” if you’re curious.
So:
At this time when I was as broke as joke. When I really needed the dough – I couldn’t earn money from ANY of my content.
All because I was HUNGRY for the VIEWS and the subs.
And the subscribers I gained couldn’t care less about my future videos.
Another successful experiment!!
Luckily, I learned a lot from this experience and I want to share that with you:
If getting more views and subscribers is your ONLY goal – it’s really not that hard to do that.
There are many ways you can manipulate the system to get attention…
But what’s the point in that?
Views and subscribers don’t do much for your channel unless you have a clear strategy and business model.
Being popular for popularity’s sake will NOT be good for you.
Imagine being famous AND homeless…
I don’t want that to be your fate.
Instead of trying to get more subs: build a community of like-minded people.
Instead of just getting more views – focus on getting the RIGHT views.
Having a bunch of 11 year olds watching your videos doesn’t do much for you unless you sell products for kids or you are 11 years old.
For example:
It’s better to have a small audience of 22 – 45 year olds that actually have an income.
If you want to sell stuff, do affiliate marketing or even get sponsorships etc. then you need an audience that can spend money.
It’s business 101: Provide value and exchange money for that value.
