Why shoutouts won’t grow your YouTube channel
You probably think a shoutout from a big YouTuber could make your channel blow up and become successful, right?
It’s possible…
It’s also possible that you’ll get struck by lightning…
But, the thing is:
It’s definitely NOT likely…and sitting around hoping for a shoutout will do you more harm than good.
Asking bigger YouTubers for shoutouts will likely get you blocked and ignored forever…
Fun times.
The mistake most people make is they assume that if someone with a big following mentions your channel, their large following will flock over to your channel and you will blow up overnight.
This is a VERY wrong.
Here’s why:
Firstly, you need to understand that audiences are made up of individual people.
They are not just numbers on a screen that will move wherever you want them to.
There must be a VERY good reason for someone to check out your channel.
A big mistake I see new creators making is this:
They ask for a shoutout from people they do not know, that aren’t even in the same niche…
This is a waste of time…think about it.
If an audience is interested in YouTube marketing and building a business…then you tell them to go check out someone making random let’s play videos…
What do you think will happen?
The correct answer is: Most people won’t care or subscribe to the let’s play channel.
That’s just the way the cookie crumbles, my friend.
The only time shoutouts actually WORK is this:
When the channel being promoted is similar to the larger channel (in the same niche, similar videos etc.).
Or the creators involved are friends.
If you want a shoutout and you’re NOT friends with the person you want a shoutout from then you need to do this:
- Engage heavily in the creator’s community…
- Offer something of value to the creator for free…
- Make sure you are in the same niche or make similar videos…
- Offer to PAY them for the shoutout.
If you DON’T do this…don’t even bother wasting your time asking anyone for a shoutout – you’ll just be ignored.
There are MUCH better and more reliable ways to grow your YouTube channel if that’s what you want…
