This Is Why You’re Using Tags Wrong
One word tags are absolutely useless.
But here’s a secret:
I used to use them too.
Yes! That’s right!
I know I drop all the gems about good SEO and optimising your videos, but I was clueless at one point too!
If you was on YouTube a few years ago, you would’ve seen the option to use YouTube’s “suggested tags” when you uploaded a video.
I saw this and I thought:
“Obviously YouTube are going to suggest the BEST tags ever, I know I can trust them!”
I was very wrong…
The suggested tags were actually trash.
If you go back and look through my old videos, you will see tags like “playstation”, “adventure game” and “gameplay”.
These tags are POINTLESS.
I’m not going to rank for any of these search terms because they’re TOO VAGUE…
YouTube got rid of this suggested tags system eventually (probably because it was shite).
But there’s more:
After I learned more about SEO and honed my skills – I realised that short tags (less than 3 words) are a complete waste of time.
Instead, you should be using LONG-TAIL KEY PHRASES…
These are search terms that people would actually type into YouTube to find your video.
Don’t waste your time using useless tags like I did.
Think about what people would type in to search for your video – and use those phrases as your tags…
This simple change can make a BIG difference.
