YouTube Video SEO Guide For Beginners – YouTube SEO Guide For Noobs #SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and in my opinion, YouTube Video SEO is the most important tool for smaller YouTubers who want to grow on YouTube. YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world and SEO is the process of communicating what your video is about to the YouTube search engine gods so that people searching for a video like yours can find your video.

In this post I will be sharing the 5 basics steps of video SEO for beginners in this YouTube Video SEO Guide For Beginners so you can implement it on your own videos and start getting results. I will also be making videos that dive deeper into each aspect of video SEO so be sure to stick around for that, consider this as your starting point into the wonderful world of SEO magic.

Why Aren't My Videos Getting Views? - Why You're Not Growing On YouTube | Grow On YouTube | YouTube Guide

Let’s be real, most smaller YouTubers don’t have a clue what Video SEO is. Every minute a bunch of videos are uploaded to YouTube and are lost in the infinite space of videos that nobody cares about. If you are a small YouTuber you need to use effective video SEO, if you’re a bigger YouTuber you should also use effective video SEO but you can get away with neglecting it if you’re big enough already. Some people know what video SEO is but they’re just crap at it, and that’s okay you can hire someone who’s good at video SEO over on growonyoutube.com #shamelessplug.

Good SEO will allow you to appear in search results when people search for your kind of video and it will also allow you to appear in the recommended videos next to videos similar to yours so as you can tell, it is very powerful for growing on youtube and bringing in traffic to your channel.

YouTube Video SEO Guide For Beginners

1) Finding The Right Key Phrase

Finding the right key phrase to target is probably the most important part of video search engine optimisation. A key phrase is the search term that people will type into YouTube to find your video. Ideally, you should pick the key phrase you want to rank for before even creating your content. Retroactively optimising your content is an option, although it’s not the best way to approach things.

When you approach the search for the right key phrase, you want to find a balance between how often people search for the phrase and how much competition there is trying to rank for that phrase. A great tool that I personally use to show me this information (and a lot more) is Tubebuddy, go to tubebuddy.com/jaycartere if you want to try it out for yourself. You can also use the google Adwords keyword planner (as well as other tools) for this information, but that shows you google search traffic and competition – not YouTube stats as far as I know.

Example:

In this EA Sports UFC 2 tutorial video, I targeted the key phrase EA Sports UFC 2 Submission Offense tips. That key phrase has a medium search volume and very low competition. Many players getting the game for the first time are likely going to go to youtube or google and search for UFC 2 submission tips as it is something many people struggle with in the game. Targeting this key phrase using efficient SEO allowed me to rank on the first page of YouTube and bring in over 10,000 views.

When you’ve researched a few key phrases and you’ve found one that is searchable and fits the piece of content you are making you should move on to the next step.

2) Title SEO

Using the right title is vital to the success of your video. In order to have a better chance to rank for your key phrase it’s best to include your key phrase at the beginning of your title. Your title optimisation does not stop there however, you should also try to include your second best key phrase that you found during your research.

Example:

As you can see, I’ve made sure to include my key phrase “EA Sports UFC 2 – Submission Offense Tips” in the beginning of my video title. I’ve also Included “How To Win By Submission” and “EA Sports UFC 2 tips” in the video title so I have the chance to rank for those key phrases. As well as ranking 1# for “EA Sports UFC 2 – Submission Offense Tips”, this video also ranked 1# for “ea sports ufc 2 how to win by submission”. Use all the available characters you can without seeming spammy and make sure you’re not neglecting your title SEO.

3) Description SEO

Description SEO is pretty simple once you have your title and your key phrase. All you need to do here is describe your video and try to include both of your key phrases at least once. I would recommend trying to include your key phrases in there twice, but if it’s not possible to do that without the description seeming spammy or not making sense then it’s not worth it as you could be penalised.

Getting your key phrases within the first few sentences of your description will bring you the best results, so try and get your key phrases in the first line if you really want the best chance for your video to rank.

Example:

In my video “How To Get Your First 100 Subscribers In Less Than A Month!” I’ve included my two key phrases in the description as well as including my title in the description after my social links:

4) Tag SEO

Tag SEO is the most fun part of SEO for me. I know many of you are gasping and wondering how I can find Tag SEO or any SEO fun, but we all have our guilty pleasures. I like tag SEO because this is where you get to use all the key phrase research you did earlier. You should include all the best key phrases in your tags as well as variations of those phrases.

Make sure to include the phrases you want to rank for the most first, the phrases you’re most likely going to rank for will be the phrases that are also included in your descriptions and titles.

Example:

For my video “How To Rank Higher With YouTube Video Tags & Get More Views!” (A video you should definitely watch for more in-depth information on using tags) I’ve used a bunch of variations of my main key phrase and I’ve been able to rank for 5 of them.

5) Closed Captions

Another way you can optimise your video and let YouTube know what your video is about is by uploading closed captions. This hasn’t seemed to have a large impact on my channel or videos so I wouldn’t say it’s 100% necessary, but every little helps.

If you script your videos then you have no excuse and you really should be taking the opportunity to upload those scripts in the form of closed captions to give yourself a little bump when it comes to ranking for your chosen phrase.

As I mentioned earlier, I’ll create a more in-depth video on all the steps I’ve shared in this video so make sure you stick around for that.

I hope this post gave you some insight and the tools you need to start dabbling at video search engine optimisation. Keep in mind that you should come back to your videos every once in a while to see if you can better optimise them as your job is never truly finished.

Be a better you today.
